Marine and Industrial Environments

While standard COLORBOND^® steel will suit most home designs and most locations, we also make specialist grades suited to more demanding environments, like those by the sea or in areas prone to industrial or chemical fumes and fallout. The following are general guidelines that should be considered when choosing the right grade of COLORBOND^® steel for your application.  For specific project applications, contact Steel Direct for further advice and recommendations.

Roofing

SUPERDURA® Stainless steel is the recommended roofing material for coastal areas where there is a constant salty smell and salt spray in the air – within 100 metres from breaking surf - or within close proximity to industrial emissions.

COLORBOND® Ultra steel is the recommended roofing material for environments where there may still be a smell of salt or salt spray in the air – approximately 100 to 200 metres from breaking surf. Similarly, the effects of industrial emissions (fumes and/or particulate fallout) are typically lessened 100 to 200 metres from the source.

Walling

General guidelines:

For walling applications SUPERDURA® Stainless steel is recommended up to 500 metres from breaking surf or calm marine locations. COLORBOND^® Ultra steel is the recommendation from 500 to 1000 metres from marine influences.

COLORBOND^® Metallic Steel should not be used for walling within 1000 metres of these same marine influences.

Cyclone Regions

COLORBOND® steel can also be used in regions that experience cyclonic conditions.

Under these circumstances, there are very specific building regulations that apply to how the roofing material is fixed in place.
